Rally today to protest against West Byron development

THE Byron Residents' Group will hold a rally today to protest a major development planned for West Byron.

President Cate Coorey said it was an opportunity for residents to show Planning Minister Pru Goward and Ballina MP Don Page they were concerned.

"It is the 11th hour for our town as we are expecting the Planning Minister to make a decision on West Byron any day, so we need to send a strong message to Sydney and those seeking to represent us," Ms Coorey said.

"As well as meeting with the Planning Minister, we have been corresponding with, and meeting, candidates for the upcoming state election in order to obtain clear and unambiguous positions on West Byron," she said.

"The people of Byron are telling us that they feel the town is being too heavily influenced by the State Government and developer interests."

Meanwhile, a petition against the West Byron development has been signed by more than 48,800 people across the world.

The Reclaim the Bay protest rally will be held at Railway Park in Byron Bay today from 11am.
