Qld man guilty of horrifying assault on two-year-old son

A CAIRNS man who assaulted his toddler son, causing a life-threatening head injury, initially said he would plead guilty to the charge but changed his mind more than a year later.

A Cairns District Court jury took just over two hours yesterday to find the 33-year-old from Cairns North, who cannot be named for legal reasons, guilty of the 2015 grievous bodily harm of his son when he was just 2½.

During the trial the court heard the boy had to undergo major surgery after suffering bleeding on the brain caused by blunt force trauma to his head.

At the time, the man shared custody with the boy's mother and was living with another partner, their infant daughter and her three other children.

His sentencing has been adjourned until November as the prosecution awaits a medical report about the long-term affects of the injuries to the boy who is now aged four.
