Council bid to make Newrybar, Tintenbar CSG no-go zones

BALLINA Shire Council will write to the State Government asking for the villages of Newrybar and Tintenbar to be included in the coal seam gas exclusion zones.

The council's submission will also include a statement that the council "does not support CSG mining anywhere within the shire".

Mayor David Wright said it was an important issue for the community.

"I have never spoken to anyone in our shire that supports CSG mining in our shire," he said.

The council will also ask the Government to include all State and Regionally Significant Farmland, as identified in the Northern Rivers Farmland Protection Project, as "Strategic Agricultural Land" for the purpose of CSG regulations.

Some areas of high quality soils in the northern part of the Ballina Shire, and coastal cane areas in the southern part of the shire, are not identified in the CSG strategic agricultural land mapping. The long awaited CSG exclusion zones were announced by the Government earlier this month.

All urban residential and low density residential areas are included in the zones (R1-R4), plus rural villages (RU5).

Future residential developments are also slated for exclusion and are on display for public comment until November 8.

This includes two areas northwest and southwest of Casino, a large area north of Cumbalum in Ballina Shire, West Ballina and along the Ballina Shire coast, and proposed North Lismore Plateau development.

In justifying the need for Tintenbar and Newrybar to be incorporated into the exclusion zones, Ballina council staff said they were rural settlements with commercial hubs and schools.

Including these villages would "achieve consistency in the application of CSG exclusion areas in the region".
