THE task of naming the next generation of police puppies has been left to the communities the four-legged crime fighters will grow up to protect.

A litter of pups, destined to one day be drug and explosive detection dogs, was welcomed at the S and T unit near Sydney this month.

Earlier this year, the NSW puppy poll attracted more than 11,000 votes when the public was first given the chance to name a little of springer spaniels.

Twitter users can name the most recent pups by following the NSW Police Force page, and clicking on the puppy poll link.

Names must start with the letters S or T.

Voting closes January 18.
