Public memorial for Ron Clarke scheduled at MCG

A PUBLIC memorial service will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground next month for Olympian Ron Clarke who died last week after a short battle with illness.

The service will be held on July 14 at 2pm.

Clarke, 78, was one of Australia's greatest middle distance runners who broke 19 world records during a stellar career during the 1960s and 1970s.

He was inducted into the Australian Sport Hall of Fame in 1983 and was also honoured with an AO and MBE for his services to athletics and the community.

Clarke was also given the honour of lighting the cauldron to start the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, resulting in one of Australia's greatest sporting images.
