Premiere of 'Les Miserables' brings out Aussie blokes

TWO of Australia's most famous exports walked the red carpet in Sydney on the weekend for the premier of the much anticipated Les Miserables.

The film adaptation of the 19th Century Broadway favourite stars Hugh Jackman as the protagonist Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe as the hardened Etienne Javert and is expected to top Christmas box office sales.

Budding Sydney actor Matty Backer, who attended the same prestigious acting school as Jackman, was among the few to score an invite to Saturday's premiere and after party.

The young NIDA graduate strutted his stuff on the carpet which stretched all the way from Pitt St Mall to the State Theatre, but admitted "Hugh and Russell were on the carpet just behind us so nobody was really looking at us".

Matty said the big names happily mingled with the crowd - he enjoyed a one on one conversation with director Tom Hooper - and the highlight of the night was when Jackman and Crowe performed three songs at the after party.

Les Miserables opens in Australian cinemas on Boxing Day and also stars leading ladies Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.
