Pregnant asylum seeker airlifted from Nauru to Australia

A PREGNANT asylum seeker suffering from a serious condition will be flown to Australia for medical treatment.

Doctors on Nauru said the 37-week pregnant Kuwaiti woman needed an emergency caesarean after she was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, a condition that can cause serious complications for both mother and baby.

The Nauruan government confirmed a patient would be airlifted to Australia in a tweet late on Thursday night.

Last week the Australian Immigration Department told media the Nauruan government health facilities were "comprehensive".

EARLIER: A PREGNANT asylum seeker on Nauru with a potentially life-threatening condition is still waiting to be flown to Queensland for treatment.

The 37-week pregnant Kuwaiti woman is suffering from pre-eclampsia and needs an emergency caesarean section.

The expectant mum late yesterday was still at Nauru Hospital, waiting on clearance from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to enter Australia.

The Courier-Mail understands she will be transferred to Cairns Hospital once she has been cleared.

If left untreated, pre-eclampsia can lead to serious complications for mother and child.

Doctors for Refugees has been monitoring the woman's condition for several weeks.

Five different obstetricians - including AMA President Dr Michael Gannon - have reviewed her condition and advised she be brought to Australia for treatment.

A spokesman for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection has said the Department does not provide specific details on the health and transfer arrangements of individuals.

Last May, a pregnant Somalian woman, Naima Ahmed, 22, showed signs of pre-eclampsia for five months on Nauru before she was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a critical condition.

Her son was born at 32 weeks.
