Internal 'glitch' was the cause of widespread outage

UPDATE 3.30PM:

WITH 66,500 customers affected by the recent power outage right across the Northern Rivers, investigations are underway to find out exactly what happened.

Electricity network provider Transgrid said the source of the outage was a system control issue.

"Some systems were not working as they should," a Transgrid spokesperson said.

"It was not an external issue such as a fallen tree or storm, so we were quick to be able to fix it.

"However, we are still investigating and are unable to say exactly where the fault lies."

Power went out across the Northern Rivers at 2.08pm and was back on at 2.33pm.

UPDATE 2.45PM:

MOTORISTS across the Northern Rivers are advised to exercise caution as traffic lights have been affected by a power outage.

Traffic lights from Brunswick Heads, Ballina, Lismore and surrounds may be blacked out as a result of the power outage.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution on the roads.

Police are aware of the outage and will be conducting traffic management duties at major intersections.

INITIAL: A HUGE area of the Northern Rivers is currently without power.

Essential Energy's Community Relations Manager North Coast, Rachel Hussell, said they were experiencing a "large number" of power outages in the Lismore, Mullumbimby and Ballina areas.

She said Essential Energy were hoping to have the issues resolved and the cause made clear in the next five to ten minutes.
