Porters build for new generation

THE name Porter is synonymous with family, passion and good business.

Brothers Gavan Snr and Paul Porter are proud of their family's 128-year business history.

The Porters joint managing directors, and fourth generation family members, are hard at work readying the new $10 million Northern Beaches store for its 8am Monday opening.

Along with the fifth generation, Scott, Gavan Jnr and Greg Porter, they are the faces behind the family-owned enterprise.

One could say hardware is in their blood.

"It's been bred into us over all those years ... we live and breath it 24/7," Paul said.

This is the third store in their hardware empire.

The new store carries about 15,000 products over a huge 8000sq m of shop space. Just three weeks ago there was 4000sq m of bare stock space and empty shelves.

Scott said the store was at the hub of the region's new development and had been well received by tradesmen in the area.

Scott began his Porters career sweeping floors after finishing high school. He has graduated to building supply manager.

Paul said his father was a great teacher and made him and Gavan start at the bottom - the company sticks to the same ethos for the younger generation of Scott, Gavan Jnr and Greg.

The fifth generation of Porters bring fresh ideas to the table - advancing the store in this age of technology.

"We're just passing on our experience," Paul said.

"They relate well to the younger builders."

Paul said Mackay is going from strength to strength and building has evolved into a fast paced industry.

He attributes this to Queensland's mining resource boom.

"We see a really good future," he said, adding that is the reason the family expanded to a third store.
