Car boot markets take off

THE Lismore Car Boot Market celebrated 24 years in business on Sunday, but it was just a warm up for next year's big one when the renowned bargain hub turns 25.

Market manager Marny Bonner said she was told a market in a "gloomy car park" would never work, but the continuing popularity of the market long ago proved the nay-sayers wrong.

"They said there was no way it would work," Mr Bonner said.

"There was also no Sunday shopping when it first opened."

The key to its success was the convenience of undercover shopping and sealed surfaces made it accessible to everybody.

About 200 stall holders turn up on the first or third Sunday of every month to sell everything from second hand goods and craft to plants and fresh produce.

And with between 6000 and 10,000 visitors the market is still going strong.

On Sunday, shoppers were treated to a special birthday performance by the Perch Creek Family Jug Band.

Ms Bonner said it was a real treat to have the band perform because she had watched its young members grow up.
