Pop-up art shop in Coraki
A POP-UP art shop in Coraki offers artists shop space for $5 a week and WJ Halia takes no commission when a piece is sold.
Sounds too good to be true?
WJ Halia has been an artist “all her life” and her own paintings of Arnhem Land hang in the @halia shop.
Born in the Ukraine, her artist name is a tribute to her parents. The W is for her mother and the J for her father.
“They were survivors,” she said.
Originally, Halia wanted a studio to work in and 18 months ago she found the small shop overlooking the Richmond and Wilson’s rivers at Coraki.
“There are a lot of creative people in Coraki,” she said.
The shop stocks clothes, lamps, sculptures, chairs and much more. All work is by local artists who receive the full amount for work sold.
“Being creative gives me peace,” Halia said.
