Poole rues bad luck after his top start in Ironman Series

ASK Mooloolaba's Matt Poole how he rates his performance in the 2012-13 Nutri-Grain Series and he says he is more than content.

Question him on how he sees his point-score standing and the disappointment and anger in his voice is palpable.

Poole, 24, goes into Sunday's final round at Noosa in fifth spot on the standings after having his hopes dashed by big waves in the past two rounds.

After putting himself in the title frame with a third and a win in the first two rounds of the series, his chances of a maiden championship have fallen away.

His hopes were snuffed out with a 15th at Surfers Paradise, where he broke his ski, and he was cruelly denied a podium finish at Coolum when knocked from his craft in the final race.

Poole said he was measuring himself by the manner in which he had been competitive throughout the series, not his position on the leaderboard.

"To be perfectly honest, I am harbouring anger with the luck I've had," he said.

"If you asked me how my racing was going, I've been really happy. The last couple of races I've consistently been at the front and the waves and elements have got the better of me. I think my form and fitness is good.

"I guess now I'm hoping I've got enough left to pull together some good racing this weekend.

"This race can really hurt. Some of the guys might be hoping for a wave for a bit of a breather or to recover. That's not going to come at Noosa. It's going to come down to who is the fittest, the most talented."
