Pooches put personality on cat walk

BIG brown eyes, velvet soft ears and fluffy fur coats.

Ballina PETstock will be swarming with them this weekend as it tries to find 'Australia's Cutest Dog'.

The competition is being run right across the country, with store winners going on to compete in the state finals where the over-all winner will fetch the national title of Australia's Cutest Dog.

Each entrant will be asked to fill out a registration form in-store before their pooch poses for a photo.

Ballina store manager Sandy Lay said the team was expecting dozens of entrants for the competition.

Each store will select a winner based on first impression, effort on the day and behaviour, unique X Factor, personality and character and expression of face and eyes.

Local store winners will receive a $250 PETstock gift card, state finalists will receive a $1,000 gift card, and the national winner will take home a luxury-spec Renault Koleos 4x2 Petrol CTV Bose Edition valued at $34,990.

Finalist judges will include celebrity vet Dr Chris Brown, editor of that's life! Magazine Linda Smith and PETstock founder and CEO Shane Young.

Ms Lay said the competition was a chance to celebrate the natural beauty of Australia's dogs in their many varied forms.

"There is no winning formula, but if there's one piece of advice I can give entrants, it's to encourage your dog to showcase their personality," she said.

"We want to see our local pooches working it for the camera and showcasing their best features for the judges, so a dog from Ballina can go all the way to the top!
