Australia beats Ireland in International Polocrosse

RYLE Waugh admitted to being nervous before she played her first game for Australia in the intermediate series against Ireland at the weekend.

While she played for Australia in round robin wins on Friday and Saturday, yesterday's final game at the Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve was her first in an international.

Australia beat Ireland 31-8 in the intermediate and 24-5 in juniors.

Waugh was number 1 in the first chukka of the intermediate game to put Australia up 5-3 against an Ireland side which played its best polocrosse of the weekend late in the junior Test and early in the intermediate Test.

"It was nerve-racking as I wanted to play my best," Waugh said.

"The weekend was awesome and I want to play more international polocrosse."

Waugh and fellow Cunningham player Carly Cooper both had a successful weekend with three wins each.

Cooper started off in the junior international yesterday playing in the number 1 position and scoring six unanswered goals in the first girls chukka. Ireland scored three goals in succession towards the end of the match.

Cooper said the way the Irish fought back showed how determined they were.

"We will now swap horses for this weekend at Morgan Park," she said.

For Cooper, that means she will be riding her second favourite horse this weekend.

Ireland coach Avis Wotton said the Irish players would keep their heads up after yesterday's internationals.

"It has been a fantastic opportunity. We will play twice as hard this weekend," she said. This weekend's games start Friday and will be held with the Warwick Rosebowl.
