Poll backs Byron KFC

THE horse has well and truly bolted when it comes to chain stores in Byron Bay, according to participants in The Northern Star's online poll.

Prompted by our report on Saturday that Kentucky Fried Chicken were interested in opening a franchise in the alternative town that famously blocked McDonald's from setting up shop in the 90s, The Star asked readers if KFC should be allowed in.

Of the 129 people who voted, 59% said yes with just 40% opposed.

We also asked if Byron still offered a unique shopping experience.

Of the 113 who participated, 25% said yes but the overwhelming majority said no.

Typical comments left on our website, most of which came from people who live outside Byron Shire, was that there were already scores of chain stores in Byron Bay so another one wouldn't matter.

"If you have allowed other smaller food franchise into Byron Bay then KFC have every right to be there. You allowed bigger companies in like Woolworths and Hogs Breath," said one contributor.

A meeting between council and KFC representatives was expected to take place this week.

It is not a scientific poll with the results reflecting only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
