Domestic violence petition demands pollies take a stand

ALL THREE tiers of government must make a public statement condemning domestic violence, says a group supporting justice for Maclean woman Lynette Daley, killed on a beach near Iluka five years ago.

Two men who were camping with Ms Daley were charged with offences relating to her death, but the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions has never brought the case to trial.

A new petition launched by the #justicefornorma team has called on the Valley's three elected members, Richie Williamson, Chris Gulaptis and Kevin Hogan to make a public statement saying domestic and family violence will no longer be tolerated in the Clarence Valley.

"It is time our elected politicians came out with a public statement like Troy Cassar Daley did and condemn violence against women," an organiser of the petition, Debrah Novak, said.

"We are looking for a clear, strong message for our community and our three politicians must not be just ticking boxes."

Ms Novak said people interested in signing or collecting a petition, some of the #justicefornorma team will be handing out petitions on the streets at Market Square Grafton between 11am and 2pm today.

Plans are under way for a two-hour candle-lit vigil to wrap up "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" on May 31.

For more information about the petition, contact Ms Novak on 0402404606.
