Police use taser to subdue man

A 50-YEAR-OLD man was tasered by police outside the Illawong Hotel at Evans Head after he allegedly verbally abused them and then tried to steal one officer’s pistol.

The man and a 53-year-old woman left the hotel about 10.30pm on Saturday.

Three police officers were outside talking to security guards when the man allegedly verbally abused the officers.

Richmond Local Area Command duty officer Paul Fredericks said the officers repeatedly told the man to stop using offensive language.

“He refused, so the officers attempted to arrest him. During the course of the arrest there was a violent altercation,” he said.

“Officers sprayed the man with OC spray (capsicum spray). Police also allege the man took hold of one of the officer’s service pistols and attempted to remove it from the holster.

“He was warned but police then drive-stunned him with a taser several times before he could be subdued.”

The man was arrested and charged.

He has been released on conditional bail and will face Lismore Local Court on August 9.
