7 charged, $10m in drugs destroyed

ALMOST $10 million worth of cannabis has been seized in a succession of drug stings this week.

The largest single seizure was at a property near Tenterfield on Thursday, where more than $3 million worth of cannabis was discovered.

New England Local Area Command police carried out the large-scale raid at a property on Eagle Creek Rd.

The property had been under police surveillance since October.

Police allegedly uncovered 1339 cannabis plants, ranging from 30cm to 120cm high, an elaborate system to water the cannabis plants, cultivators, generators, irrigation pumps and vehicles.

The cannabis crops were in four different locations within the property.

Police also discovered a campsite where a structure used to dry harvested cannabis was built.

A 49 and a 48-year-old man were arrested at the property and charged with cultivating a large quantity of cannabis.

New England Acting Superintendent Rowan O'Brien said it was one of the biggest seizures in recent history.

"It will have a significant impact on the availability of cannabis in the region and towards the coast," he said.

"This is an example, considering we had 16-18 police officers working on this (on Thursday), that we have the resources to execute something like this."

Police later raided the two men's houses where they allegedly found more cannabis.

Further east and Richmond police and the State Crime Command drug squad were using the police helicopter this week to seize $6.4 million worth of cannabis.

More than 3200 mature cannabis plants were destroyed.

Five people were charged and will face court in March.

The areas targeted were Tabulam, Blue Knob, Jiggi, Georgica, Bulldog, Rappville, Kippenduff and Mummulgum.

Richmond crime manager Detective Inspector Greg Moore said it was unfortunate the message was not getting out there.

The investigation into cannabis crops was not over yet, he said.
