Rescuers working to retrieve body from mountains

RESCUERS in the NSW Blue Mountains were still working to retrieve a body, believed to be that of missing Sydney businessman Gary Tweddle, on Tuesday night.

A recovery operation began at dawn after a rescue helicopter spotted what appeared to be man's body in a cliff line near Leura.

Police told the media on Tuesday afternoon it would be hours before rescuers got to the body but confirmed they were in close contact with 23-year-old Mr Tweddle's family.

The site is just 1km from the resort where he last seen almost seven weeks ago.

On the night he went missing, Mr Tweddle phoned friends to say he was lost in bushland.

His girlfriend was helping with the recovery operation on Tuesday and messages of support were flooding the Facebook page belonging to Mr Tweddle's father, who flew from the UK to Australia to help with the search when he discovered his son was missing.

He had been celebrating the end of a work conference at the Fairmont Resort when he phoned a friend to say he was lost in the bush almost seven weeks ago.

Tweddle's girlfriend flew to Sydney from Brisbane earlier today.

Superintendent Darryl Jobson told media the body matched the description of Mr Tweddle.

"It may be him but were not ruling out anything else,'' Supt Jobson said.
