Police officers assaulted: Tweed/Byron police in hospital

TWO police officers have been hospitalised following an incident at Cudgen this morning.

About 7am today, police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command were called to Tweed Coast Road, Cudgen, following reports of a concern for welfare.

Police tried to speak to the man; however, he fled and was found a short time later in a potato field on Plantation Road.

It's alleged the 35-year-old man confronted them with a broom and a struggle occurred, where the man punched and attempted to eye-gouge the police.

A police taser was deployed and the man was taken into custody.

Two male senior constables were taken to Tweed Heads Hospital for treatment.

One officer has facial injuries, while the other has a leg injury.

They are both in a stable condition.

The 35-year-old man was also taken to Tweed Heads Hospital as a precaution, and remains there under police guard.
