Fleeing suspect struck by police car

UPDATE, 6AM: A man is facing charges and a police officer is under investigation after the man was struck by a police vehicle as he fled from an allegedly stolen car.

Two armed robberies and an unsuccessful armed robbery in South Brisbane Monday afternoon led to an incident on the Ipswich Motorway at Goodna.

After a number of sightings and an aborted pursuit at Acacia Ridge, a pursuit started about 10.55pm after a Brisbane dog squad officer saw the ute allegedly used in the robberies at Oxley.

"A pursuit occurred with the vehicle travelling west-bound on the Ipswich Motorway," Ipswich Inspector Keith McDonald said.

"Stingers were deployed on the motorway just after the Goodna on-ramp. The vehicle collided with the centre concrete barrier and came to rest about 500m past where the stingers were deployed.

"Unfortunately one of the occupants of the vehicle was struck by a police vehicle as he attempted to escape over the fence surrounding the Ipswich Motorway.

"He was hit as he was running across the motorway on the west-bound lanes."

The other man who was in the ute fled while a 24-year-old from Gumdale was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with deep cuts. After being released, he was taken into police custody.

The circumstances of him being struck by the police vehicle are the subject of an investigation by the Ethical Standards Command.

"This has been labelled a critical incident due to the fact that a gentleman who we were pursuing has sustained some injuries," Insp. McDonald said.

"The officer is obviously suffering shock."
