POLICE warn revellers at Splendour in the Grass they will be out in force to target drunkenness and illegal drug use.

Splendour in the Grass field commander Inspector Gary Cowan said more than 100 police from around the state had converged on Byron Bay for Operation Splendour 2012 which began on Wednesday and will finish on Monday.

"Police will be out in force over the Splendour period targeting drink and drug driving," he said.

"The RBT bus and random roadside drug testing bus will be set up in the Byron Bay area."

Insp Cowan said as well as the RBT and drug testing buses, additional resources from the police dog squad, the riot squad, the operational support group and mounted police had been deployed for Operation Splendour 2012.

He said police paid for by the Splendour promoters would be patrolling inside the venue and the camping area.

"We want to see people enjoy themselves so if you are going to drink, drink in moderation and respect other people around you.

"People can come to Byron Bay and enjoy the festivities but if they decide they want to drink and drive or take drugs and drive there is a good chance they will be caught."

Insp Cowan said he expected police to detect numerous people with drugs including cannabis, ice, ecstasy and amphetamines during the operation.

He said people going to Splendour had no excuse for getting caught drink- or drug-driving as public transport was available.

"Promoters in consultation with the police have arranged buses to transport festival goers to and from the venue."
