Police charge same drink driver twice within hours

A NEWCASTLE man was caught high-range drink driving by police twice in the same Lismore street within two hours on Saturday night.

Police breath testing on Union St at South Lismore pulled the 49-year-old over at about 11.45pm.

He was subjected to a roadside breath test and arrested after returning a high-range reading.

At Lismore police station the man's blood alcohol content was confirmed as high-range on the breath analysis machine.

Police suspended the man's licence and charged him with high-range drink driving.

When the sergeant handed the man his charge sheets and court date he reminded the man not to drive.

But within minutes of leaving Lismore police station, the man was pulled over on Union St again and breath tested.

After recording his second high-range reading within two hours, the man was again taken to Lismore Police Station and charged with high-range drink driving and driving with a suspended licence.

He was granted conditional bail on both drink driving charges and will appear in Lismore Local Court in February.
