Police charge 66 protesters over Newcastle blockade

POLICE have laid charges against 66 climate change protesters in Newcastle, including a man who suspended himself from a rope above a ship at Kooragang Island.

Two women are accused of abseiling from a bridge at the Port Waratah coal facility. Others were charged for chaining themselves to ships and blocking a rail bridge.

About 200 kayaks blocked Newcastle Harbour as part of the anti-fossil fuel protest involving about 1500 people on Sunday.

Police deployed 20 boats to deal with the protesters.
