Police call for help on shooting

DETECTIVES investigating the shooting death of a Highway Patrol officer at Tamworth yesterday, have renewed an appeal for information from the public.

Senior Constable David Rixon, 40, died after suffering gunshot wounds when he stopped a car in Lorraine Street, Tamworth, about 8am on Friday.

A 47-year-old man remains in John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound.

An independent critical incident investigation team is being lead by the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad.

Commander of the Homicide Squad, Detective Superintendent Mick Willing, said police are keen to speak with anyone who has information about the incident.

"While we have spoken with numerous witnesses at the scene, we are still keen to speak to anyone with any information in relation to the incident," Det Supt Willing said.

A 38-year-old man, who was arrested a short time after the incident, was questioned by police overnight and has been released without charge pending further investigation.

Detectives will endeavour to speak with the injured man once he is deemed well enough by medical authorities and are seeking information on a vehicle connected with the incident.

"A 1996-model white Holden Statesmen sedan was taken from the crime scene for forensic examination," Det Supt Willing said.

"That vehicle has NSW registration BZY 65L.

"We have spoken with numerous witnesses at the scene, however, we want to speak with anyone who may have seen that vehicle being driven in the area of West Tamworth before 8am yesterday.

"We are particularly keen to speak with anyone who witnessed the events leading up to the confrontation at 8am, who hasn't yet spoken with police."
