Police talk down man who threatened to set himself on fire

UPDATE, 9AM: A man threatened to set himself on fire outside the Ipswich police station in the early hours of Monday morning.

The man arrived at the Ellenborough St police station around 2.20am on Monday morning where he doused himself in a flammable liquid and threatened to set himself alight.

Over a period of four hours police negotiators talked the man down.

Police locked down an area in the Ipswich CBD while they spoke to the man.

Ambulance and fire fighters were on the scene in the event the man carried out his threats.

The man was eventually talked down by police and taken to the Ipswich Hospital.

The emergency situation was revoked at 6.20am.

Police investigations are continuing.

 

UPDATE, 7AM: Police have revoked the emergency situation that was declared at Ipswich earlier this morning.

The declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act was made around 3.20am and was revoked around 6.20am.

A man has been taken to hospital for assessment.

No one was injured during the incident.

 

6AM: A police blockade is in place in Ipswich after police received a call at 2.20am about a man making threats on Ellenborough St.

Police declared an "emergent situation" at 3.20am that now includes parts of Ellenborough St between Limestone and Roderick sts, South St between Ellenborough and Nicholas sts and Wilson Ln.

Road closures are in place and drivers are being told to stay away from the area.
