Police say Caneland Shopping Centre assault "unfounded"

UPDATE: AN INVESTIGATION into an apparent daylight assault at Caneland Central Shopping Centre, Mackay has been "resolved" because the report was "unfounded", Queensland Police said.

A spokeswoman said Mackay Police had conducted investigations into the reported April 8 incident, in which a 59-year-old woman was supposedly kicked in the stomach, but found it had no foundation, "...suggesting the incident didn't happen".

When asked whether charges may be laid for making a false report to police, the spokeswoman said "It's sufficient, but (it's) quite rare for that to happen".

UPDATE: Investigators have been able to resolve this incident after further follow up, police said.

Police are thankful to the members of the public who assisted with this investigation.

WEDNESDAY: A middle aged woman was kicked in the stomach and then hit in the neck in a daring daytime robbery which netted the thieves a carton of soft drink.

Police say about 1.30pm on April 8 the 59-year-old victim was walking out of Mackay's Caneland Central Shopping Centre when she was set upon by her assailants.

It's understood the woman was making her way towards a taxi rank when two other females approached her from different directions,

Police say one of the assailants asked for money and when the request was refused the shopper was held from behind by one of the females, while the other kicked her in the stomach and then struck her to the neck, causing her to fall to the ground.

While she was on the ground, the carton of soft drink was stolen from her trolley.

The two females then ran from the area.

The two women who approached the shopper are described as;

  • Caucasian appearance, about 19 years of age, 177 cm tall, proportionate build, black collar length unkempt hair, wearing a purple tank-top shirt and blue 3/4 length denim shorts
  • Caucasian appearance, heavy build, black and straight multi-coloured hair, pierced lips (centre piercing) blue 3/4 length denim shorts, and cream coloured t-shirt
