Police appeal for witnesses to Friday's fatal car crash

CIRCUMSTANCES surrounding a car crash that sent the Tweed into gridlock and claimed a man's life on Friday are unclear.

Police are appealing for any information or witnesses who might have seen what happened.

"Police are trying to locate a white VN or VP model Holden Commodore that was being driven by a Caucasian male in his 30s," a police statement said.

"The Commodore may have been a Queensland registered vehicle."

The male driver had short hair and a solid muscular build.

At the time of the crash he was wearing coloured board-shorts and no shirt.

"Investigators would like to speak to anyone with information about the Commodore or its driver, witnesses to the incident, or the events leading up to it," the statement said.

About 1pm on Friday a northbound Toyota Corolla and two southbound vehicles, a taxi and a van, collided on the Pacific Hwy just south of the Kennedy Dr merge lane.

The driver of the Toyota, a 63-year-old Varsity Lakes man, died at the scene.

The 28-year-old female driver of the van from Bilambil was taken to hospital with serious injuries while the 49-year-old male taxi driver from Tweed Heads West was treated for minor injuries.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner outlining the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

Anyone with information about this should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: www1.police.nsw.gov.au/.

Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
