Polarisation wins Sydney Cup ... agains

COREY Brown summed it up best after Polarisation won at Royal Randwick on Saturday: "They can't take it off us this time."

This was sweet justice for Brown, the Godolphin stable and trainer Charlie Appleby as Polarisation out-stayed his rivals in a thrilling Group 1 $2 million Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m).

Polarisation has had to win this race twice. He was first over the line in the Sydney Cup two weeks ago and only for stewards to declare a no-race after the ill-fated Almoonqith broke down at the turn out of the straight the first time.

Brown was one of six jockeys that day who rode out the 3200m that day unaware of the stewards' call and the champion jockey was gutted when he learned Polarisation's "win" was all for nothing.

The Sydney Cup was rescheduled for Saturday and Brown had to waste again to ride at 51.5kg - but this time it was worth it.

"If they want to run this race a third time, he would win it again," Brown said.

"I told them they should have left it a fortnight ago because it's going to be the same result so this is very satisfying.

"Obviously with all the media and the drama of a fortnight ago, to come out again and I wouldn't say defy all odds, but the history of it, I felt everything was working against us.

"It is a big relief and to do in these famous royal blue colours of Godolphin is a dream come true."

Polarisation ($6.50) simply defied the challenge of top-weight Who Shot Thebarman ($12) to finally win the Sydney Cup by a short neck margin with favourite Big Duke ($3.70) a half length away third.

Trainer Charlie Appleby was back home in England but would have been delighted to win his Australian Group 1 race, capping a hugely successful season for his team of stayers down under.
