DIY raft races to return for second Ballina Prawn Festival

C'MON and get on board this year's second annual Ballina Prawn Festival, which has a raft of activities planned.

And the net gain for this Saturday's festival is fun - with the DIY raft races again a highlight.

Teams of two are given materials to build a raft, then those rafts are raced on the Richmond River.

Festival director Nadia Eliott-Burgess said: "We loved that people really got out there and had such a great time last year, and we've worked really hard to make sure the 2014 Ballina Prawn Festival is going to be a lot of fun for everyone.

"This is a festival all about community participation.

"Entries for the raft races are full, but you can still participate in water activities.

"We are encouraging all recreational craft to participate in the Ballina Fishermen's Co-op boat parade.

"Gather at the trawler harbour, West Ballina, at 10.30am for an 11am start. Listen for Marine Rescue on radio channels VHF72 or 37MEG91 for parade directions."

The festival will begin at 9am with a grand streetparade along River St and Kingsford Smith Dr.

There will be live music throughout the day including The Pigs, Dan Hannaford and Juzzie Smith.

The festival will be held at Missingham Park from 9am until 9pm.

Entry is by gold coin.

Prawn in parliament

THE Ballina Prawn Festival has made it all the way to Federal Parliament.

But it didn't spark the kinds of debate we are used to seeing in the House.

Page MP Kevin Hogan gave the Ballina festival a plug to the nation. He said the festival celebrated the "laid-back Ballina lifestyle".

"It brings together thousands of visitors," he said.

He also said "these events cost a lot of money" and acknowledged the event's sponsors.
