Plenty of contenders at Evans Head Malibu Classic

About 165 surfers from Under-10s through to Over-65s will be compete at the 26th annual Evans Head Malibu Classic this weekend.

Competition started yesterday with the open division hitting the water around 10am this morning.

Previous event winner Jared Neal is among the favourites to win along with Dane Pioli and Isaac Fields while defending champion Joel Tilley is out injured.

"Joel is out of action for about six months with a busted wing,” event organiser Ross Cribb said.

"The loggers division will be one to watch and our junior divisions are looking pretty good too.

"There is a bit of swell coming so I think we'll have some luck with the waves over the weekend.”

Lennox Head surfer Scott Channon and Kingscliff's Dean Bevan are also backing after winning their divisions last year.

A band will play at the Evans Head Bowling club tonight with plenty of other entertainment and surfboard give-aways over the weekend.

Money raised from the event will go towards the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Cancer Council and other local organisations.

The loggers final is set down for noon with the open final at 1.30pm Monday.

There will be a presentation afterwards at the bowling club.
