Plaque to commemorate Casino weir
A COMMEMORATIVE plaque will be unveiled for the Manyweathers Weir at Casino by Richmond Valley Council tomorrow.
While the Manyweathers Weir has been removed since July last year, various agencies and groups have worked together to ensure that the historical link between the community and Manyweathers Weir is not lost.
Council, in conjunction with recreational fishers, State Water, and NSW Industries and Investment – Fisheries, have created the plaque.
Manyweathers Weir was constructed in 1966 to provide a secure water supply for the town during droughts.
It was named Manyweathers Weir as it was adjacent to the Manyweathers residence on the north bank of the Richmond River.
The town’s water supply has since been sourced from Jabour Weir.
“While Manyweathers Weir no longer serves its original purpose, it is imperative that the historical link and significance that the Manyweathers Weir had in the community is not lost,” mayor Col Sullivan said.
