Planting a macca tree to celebrate 40 years

KIDS from Tregeagle Public School planted a macadamia tree in the school garden as part of the macadamia industry's 40th anniversary celebrations.

The students have been learning about the native nut and the contribution the industry makes to the Northern Rivers.

A group of growers met with the students and are donating a portion of their profit from this year's harvest to the school.

Local macadamia grower Hugh Harris is the driving force behind the fundraising initiative and the entire school has visited his farm.

From its small beginnings in the Northern Rivers 40 years ago, there are now more than 700 growers in Australia. They produce around 40,000t of nut-in-shell each year. The Northern Rivers region is the largest macadamia producing region in Australia, producing around half of Australia's macadamias.
