Plans for new $1.5m motel at Ballina

PLANS for a new $1.5 million motel have been lodged with Ballina Shire Council.

The 10-unit development, as well as a caretaker's residence and swimming pool, would be built on a vacant block of land on the corner of River and Kerr Sts, Ballina.

In 2009 the block of land went up for auction but failed to sell despite the registered owners, ZZZ FM Pty Ltd, dropping the price from $1.2 million to $800,000.

But now the property has new owners and they have lodged an application with the council for a new motel.

In documents submitted to the council, Ardill Payne & Partners wrote that the proposed development "will improve the tourist accommodation base in the Shire and town and will thus facilitate increased tourism opportunities which have positive economic benefits".

"The proposed development will generate employment in the building sector during the construction of the development," the report states.

"The construction of the development will inject in the order of $1.5 million into the local and regional economy as a consequence of increased demands for building and construction materials, plant and equipment.

"Significant positive impacts will result in the local economy as a consequence of the multiplier effect from the short-term and permanent employment generation and increased demand on the construction industry."

The development application for the motel is currently being assessed by council staff.
