Big fire at Evans this weekend, but nothing to worry about

AN IMPORTANT hazard reduction burn to protect Evans Head leading into summer is planned by the Rural Fire Service this weekend with about 40 firefighters and a helicopter involved.

The operation will target land owned by Richmond Valley Council and the State Government, bounded by the airfield, the industrial estate, Currajong St and Broadwater-Evans Head Road.

A RFS is yet to decide whether the burn will happen Saturday or Sunday.

"This Hazard Reduction will be very obvious to Evans Head residents and, depending on wind direction on the day, there may be some smoke impact in some areas," the RFS says on its Facebook page.

"However at this time winds are forecast to be from the South, which would minimise this."

The RFS says the burn is important to protect the town from the threat of bushfires this summer.
