Phoenix looking for first win against depleted Jets

THE Wellington Phoenix scored their first goal of the A-League season last week and will be hoping for more against the Newcastle Jets' depleted defence in Wellington tonight.

Roy Krishna scored the Kiwi outfit's first goal but it counted for nothing in a 6-1 defeat to the Melbourne Victory on Monday night.

Ernie Merrick's team has a good record against Newcastle at home, however, and with Nigel Boogard the visitors' last recognised fit central defender, the Jets could struggle tonight.

Already missing regular defenders Daniel Mullen (knee) and Lachlan Jackson (ankle), makeshift centre-back Ben Kantarovski limped off in the Jets' loss to Sydney last week with a torn meniscus and is set for an extended lay-off.

The good news for winless Wellington, meanwhile, is that regular defenders Marco Rossi and Tom Doyle are back this week after missing the Victory thrashing.

In the past few years Westpac Stadium has become something of a fortress for the Phoenix but they have now lost a club record of six straight games at the venue.
