Peter Furler's On Fire tops charts

ONE of Australia’s biggest music exports is back on the top of the charts after the release of his debut solo album.

Peter Furler, who started Newsboys in a garage in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, yesterday released On Fire and within hours it was on the top of the most downloaded albums on iTunes for Christian music.

Furler’s career already includes 25 number one songs, more than seven million album sales and multiple awards.

On Fire was yesterday winning critical acclaim – both from the fans on Facebook and music industry veterans who have watched him over the past 25 years.

The multiple Grammy nominated artist, who was also named Christian music’s Songwriter of the Year, says he has been humbled by the support of fans and the music industry.

"Many times in the process of making this album I felt something special was happening. The reaction from fans and critics has confirmed those feelings,'' Furler told the Sunshine Coast Daily.

" My favorite song on the record at the moment is "Glory to the King".

"During the writing and recording of that tune my Grandma  passed away in Adelaide. It reminds me of her brilliant legacy and her brilliant future."

The first single off his album Reach has received great airplay while Furler will feature on the July covers of leading Christian music magazines.

"It's been very humbling to have such a loving welcome back "

Furler said his music had always been about making a difference and leaving his audience encouraged – and his latest album is no different.

“Reach’’ has broken into the Billboard Top 10 overall Christian radio airplay chart as well as topping the Australian equivalent for airplay.

The song also becomes Furler’s first video as a solo artist.

The video, which is also shared here on godtube, snared more than 15,000 hits in a matter of hours after its release on Tuesday.

Peter’s father, Bill Furler, of Buddina, adds his voice to one of the four corporate worship tracks on the album, “Greater Is He”.

Furler said the album was a new beginning after the heavy touring schedule with Newsboys.

The keen surfer moved from Nashville to the Gulf of Florida and took time to reflect and express himself through visual art, surfing and playing music just for pure enjoyment.

“The former newsboys' leader takes a stab at solo life, blending the best styles from his tenure with the band. Catch plenty of high octane pop anthems alongside moving moments of worship.” – Gospel Music Channel

“A Return Worth Waiting For… There isn’t a dull moment on the record… This is one of CCM’s ‘must-own’ albums of 2011 and it doesn’t disappoint.” –

“Sounding refreshed and creatively sharp as ever, Peter Furler takes listeners on a journey... While newsboys fans will likely gravitate to Furler’s debut solo effort, there’s no doubt a new generation of listeners will also be impacted by this solid collection of reflective and worshipful songs that meshes pop, rock and electronic influences.” –

“On Fire is a thought-provoking, immensely entertaining project at its core, and a polished product from an industry veteran.” –

“There’s plenty of programming, power chords, and praise, all tied together by alt-pop arrangements and his signature Aussie accent…Furler remains a catchy songwriter.” –

“Peter Furler’s On Fire on Solo Debut… And it sounds great… vertical lyrics, straight-ahead electric guitars, and pulsating electronic rhythms… That’s something to get fired up about.” –

“It’s great to hear Peter back, with his strong vocals which you instantly know as Peter Furler when you hear him singing. It’s good to see the man who helped craft the sound and noise of the newsboys take a step forward on his own, and create an album a little bit different to what we have known him for with his old band. Now with a brand new era of anthemic songs and sounds, Peter Furler is definitely On Fire.” –

Peter Furler is one of Australia’s biggest exports of any musical genre.

He has collectively performed to over 15,000 Muslims in Morocco, for the Pope during World Youth Day, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, at a 9/11 service for U.S. military leaders at the Pentagon.

He has played at a New Age festival on the shores of Galilee in Israel, rocked the punters at an outback pub in Australia, and was enthusiastically received in April in front of 20,000 people at Easterfest in Toowoomba.
