Peter Cosgrove tipped to be Australia's next GG

FORMER military general Peter Cosgrove is widely tipped to be named Australian Governor-General next month.

The nation's first female Governor-General Quentin Bryce is due to retire in March after her term was extended by the Gillard government last year.

It is understood the Abbott Government has decided on the appointment, but that it has not been finalised or sent to Buckingham Palace for approval.

General Cosgrove, a veteran of the Vietnam War, led the Army and then the wider defence force in the latter part of a stellar military career spanning nearly 50 years.

The highly-respected general led international peacekeeping forces in East Timor in 1999.

Since his retirement he has remained in public life as a member of various boards and is the public face of Legacy's Raise a Glass campaign.
