A TOOWOOMBA pet groomer has proven her skills are some of the best in the country.

Taryn Bidstead travelled to Sydney recently for the Groomquest 2013 event.

The competition invites pet groomers from Australia and other countries to showcase their creative skills on not only dogs, but cats.

Mrs Bidstead claimed the blue ribbon in Australia's first cat creative grooming competition.

She was challenged to create a coloured design in the coat of a Burmese cat.

"The design was a spider in a spider web," she said.

"To make the design stand out, I did a rainbow-coloured spider web with a typical Aussie redback spider.

"I thought it would be a fairly easy design but it turned out to be quite a technical thing to do.

"Cat hair is not an easy hair to clip."

Mrs Bidstead also came second for her grooming of shih tzu cross poodle called Sooty and placed fourth for her creative efforts with Pablo the poodle.

She said Groomquest was also an event to learn more about trends in grooming and new skills.

"It was good to watch and learn from other groomers," she said.

Mrs Bidstead has been in the pet industry for 13 years but only recently branched out into creative grooming.

Using coloured, non-toxic chalk and dyes, designs and patterns can be fashioned into the coats of animals.

The Creative Canines owner has completed designs on dogs, cats and even goats.

She finds plenty of work locally, with coloured tails, ears and feet a popular trend among dog owners.
