Personality plus is key to quest

NINETEEN year-old Beth Power wows people with her bright pink clothes, pink mobile phone and pink beauty salon but it's her inner beauty that will decide whether or not she wins the Lions Medical Research Personality Quest.

When asked why her personality gives her a good chance to win the contest, she said it's because she's "honest" and "bubbly".

Ms Power is also multi-talented, and as she confidently filed a customer's nails, she explained in-depth to The Northern Star why she got involved in the contest.

"My mum has been fundraising for breast cancer for about five years through the Lion's Club," she said.

"They knew me through word of mouth and they asked me to do it.

"I've never done a fundraiser before but now I'm a bit older I can take on a few more things and (they) can be a lot of fun."

Twenty four women from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Tweed and the Northern Rivers have entered the personality quest and the winner will be announced in mid-2012.

Contestants must raise funds for medical research and the amount they acquire will be taken into consideration when judging occurs.

They may choose their own ways to raise money and Ms Power has decided to hold a bikini car wash.

She also intended to hold a Kings and Queens ball late this year or in early 2012.

Now a confident young lady, Ms Power said she was once a "shy tom-boy (who) wanted to be a Crusty Demons (motorcyclist)".

But after dropping-out of high school she attended beauty therapy classes in Byron Bay with nine other girls and the experience changed her life.

"That's when I started to come out of my shell," Ms Power said.

The beauty school taught her etiquette and how to interact with people in a positive manner.

It seems to have paid-off too, with the young beauty devotee winning the NSW branch of the Miss Pin-up Australia contest earlier this year, which judges contestants on such characteristics.

She is now in the running to win the national Miss Pin-up Australia contest.

If you would like to attend Ms Power's bikini car wash or King's and Queen's ball keep updated at her Facebook page called "Glam Doll Beauty Therapy".
