HOT weather could not wipe the smile off the faces of netball team St Joseph's Penrith on the first day of the Lismore Workers Masters Games.

The over-40s team are no strangers to the event with Penrith teams faring well in the competition over the past decade.

"We come back every time and we usually bring two or three teams,” captain Lyndahl Riley said.

"We mix the teams around a bit but we try to keep the core group together.

"A lot of us play in the our local A-grade competition and we enjoy our time here at the end of the season.

"A few of the girls won grand finals this year and some of us just missed out so we're quite a strong team.

"We're all suffering a bit from the heat but we'll enjoy the 8am start (today) and they've even said they will shorten the games if they have to.”

Netball has one of the highest participation rates with teams making the trip from Coffs Harbour, Gold Coast and Sydney.

About 1600 competitors are competing across 13 sports this weekend around Lismore.

Netball finals tomorrow will be hotly contested with Penrith usually a chance at taking out a medal.

"We'd absolutely love to win it but it's about having fun and enjoying the weekend.

"There is quite a few of us that have played together on and off for over 10 years now.

"Some of the competition is really tough and we've actually played some of the over-35 teams.

"That has been some stiff opposition but it's nice and we'd love to thank all the local umpires and organisers.”
