Pedro's on sunny holidays

HAVE you noticed an alpaca walking the streets of the Northern Rivers over the last couple of weeks?

If you have, don't be alarmed, it wasn't the result of drink spiking. The seven-year-old alpaca, Pedro, is merely on winter holidays with his entourage - his Tasmanian handler Ludo Mineur and his wife.

"It gets a bit cold in Tasmania this time of year and there aren't many tourists around so for the past eight years we have travelled up here in our motorhome to put a smile on people's faces," Mr Mineur said when the Northern Star caught up with him and Pedro in Ballina yesterday.

"The response has been amazing. One guy did a u-turn to see what was going on, and besides all the children and adults who have stopped to get their photo taken with Pedro, a big burly biker wanted a photo."

Luckily, like most celebrities who visit the Northern Rivers, Pedro is used to the fame having already made an appearence on Japanese TV.

"Alpacas are very cute animals but they are also very timid so most people don't get to see them close up," Mr Mineur said.

He said in what had become an "annual pilgrimage", this year Pedro had visited Byron, Ballina and Lismore High school before he starts the journey home tomorrow.
