Pedestrian killed on the Pacific Hwy

A MAN has died after being hit by a Kombi on the Pacific Highway at Tyagarah.

The Northern Star last night reported the highway's northbound lane had been closed near Tyagarah Rd after car hit a pedestrian.

Police have now revealed the pedestrian, a man, believed to be aged 19, was killed in the incident, which happened just before 9pm.

Police said the woman driving the Kombi and a passing doctor both stopped to try and help the young man, but he had suffered severe injuries and died before emergency services could reach the scene.

The highway's northbound lane remained closed until about 1am.

Inspector Greg Jago of the Tweed-Byron Local Area Command said detectives were still trying to confirm the identity of the young man. They hoped to confirm his identity today.

The driver of the Kombi was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests and was being interviewed by police.

Investigators are calling for anyone who saw the crash or the events leading up to it to contact Byron Bay police on 6685 9499 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
