Pedestrian killed by P-plate driver near Byron Bay

A PEDESTRIAN is dead after he was hit by a car driven by a local P-plate driver near Byron Bay this morning.

Tweed Byron police confirmed the 25-year-old Gold Coast man was killed when he was hit by a car on The Coast Rd at Broken Head at about 3.30am.

Police said the 25-year-old man was hit by a Holden sedan, driven by a 20-year-old Ballina man, and died at the scene.

The driver of the late model burnt orange Holden was taken to Byron Bay hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

A tow truck removed the Commodore, which had visible windscreen damage, from the location, near Bundaleer Rd.

Byron Bay sergeant Deards described the crash as a "freak incident".

A crime scene was established and the North Coast Crash Investigation Unit are at the scene.

The Coast Rd was closed in both directions and motorists travelling between Lennox Head and Byron Bay are being diverted via the Pacific Highway.

Crash investigation officers took several hours trying to piece together what happened.

The Coast Rd was reopened to motorists about 10.30am.
