Police search for clues to death
UPDATE 10.30am: POLICE are trying to piece together how a ute hit and fatally injured a 55-year-old woman at Lismore Heights this morning,
Richmond Local Area Command Crime Manager Detective Inspector Greg Moore said the woman died at Lismore Base Hospital after she was hit by a white Toyota four wheel drive travelling east on Donnans Rd just before 7am.
The incident happened outside Ronald Jones' house and when he went outside he found the driver of the ute, a man he described as being in his 30's, tending to the injured woman.
Mr Jones said the man called 000 on his mobile phone and paramedics arrived shortly after.
Paramedics treated the woman at the scene before she was taken by ambulance to Lismore Base Hospital in a critical condition.
Det Insp Moore said the woman, whose husband has been notified of the incident, died shortly after arriving at hospital.
The collision has sparked calls from neighbours for a reduced speed limit on the road.
Neighbour Marilyn Smith described the news of the woman's death as shocking.
"It's a shocking thing to happen," she said.
"I am going to council this morning to complain."
"If you are going to allow it (60km/h speed limit) put signs up warning drivers or speed bumps to slow them down or something."
Det Insp Moore said the detectives from the Ballina Crash Investigation Unit were on the scene trying to piece together how the collision happened.
He said early indications were that the morning sun may have been a factor for the man driving the Ute.
A report on the woman's death will be prepared for the coroner.
