Pavlyuchenkova bundles Keznetsova out of Sydney International

TENNIS: Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova is out of the Sydney International, falling to Russian compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets in the second round.

The world No.9 Kuznetsova was one of two top seeds to fall early on day three at Homebush, with world No.18 Roberta Vinci being upset by Barbora Strycova.

After beating Australian No.1 Samantha Stosur on Monday, world No.27 Pavlyuchenkova then downed Kuznetsova 7-5 6-3.

Ninth-seeded Vinci had no answers for fellow veteran Strycova, losing 6-2 6-3.

Wildcard Eugenie Bouchard had a 6-4 6-3 win over third seed Dominika Cibulkova, the reigning WTA Finals champion and a finalist in Sydney in 2013.

Australian teenager Alex De Minaur caused the upset of the men's tournament, upsetting Frenchman Benoit Paire.

Ranked 287 places below the world No.46 and playing in his second match on the men's tour, the 17-year-old De Minaur beat a tiring Paire 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-1) in one hour and 44 minutes.

De Minaur, a Wimbledon junior finalist in 2016, upset 2015 Sydney runner-up Mikhail Kukushkin in qualifying for the Brisbane International.
