Plan for a big jump in parking fees around Base Hospital
WHILE many are buzzing about the construction of the new Lismore Base Hospital multi-storey carpark, there may be a flipside to the three-stage project.
Lismore City Council has called for community feedback on a proposed $3 per hour street parking scheme for Hunter St, parts of Uralba St, and several other roads.
Currently drivers pay $2 per two hours to park on Uralba St, while Hunter St and surrounding streets offer unrestricted parking.
Under the new scheme staff would also pay $7 per day to park on Dalziell St.
The council report stated these rates would create consistency across the carpark and street parking, ease traffic congestion on Uralba St and encourage drivers to use the new carpark.
What people said
Some hospital visitors thought fee increases would support the carpark, but felt $3 per hour was too much.
"I wouldn't pay that ... I'd probably just get a taxi from the Square," Ricki-Lee Birkbeck of Kyogle said.
"I just don't think there's a consideration for people's inconveniences ... people travel distances and then get hooked up with all this extra money," Alex Lubanski from Casino said.
Loretta Parsons, Goonellabah, said she would welcome the new scheme if it eased traffic congestion on Uralba St.
"I think it will help. Just do something about it because a lot of people are complaining," Ms Parsons said.
Shuttle bus idea
Marshall Fittler has been campaigning for a shuttle bus to pick up distant street parkers and bring them to the hospital.
He said he is sceptical about time-restricted parking for hospital patients.
"If somebody has to go and visit Emergency during the day, they're forced to use paid parking ... maybe you'll get in in an hour, maybe you have to wait eight ... you've got no control over time," he said.
The proposed street parking model would be implemented alongside the completion of stage one of the multi-storey carpark on Uralba St next year.
The council recommends raised on-street parking revenue go towards road and infrastructure improvements within the hospital precinct.
