Parishioners plan to buy church
GOD helps those who help themselves, and so the people of Federal will not be praying for a miracle in order to save their beloved church.
Instead they plan to raise the cold hard cash to buy the church, which the Anglican Parish plans to put up for sale, themselves.
A public meeting, held in Federal on Thursday night, was attended by about 70 concerned residents.
Those in attendance said the meeting was very positive and it was quickly decided the best course of action was to purchase the property, rather than challenge the legality of the church’s move to sell it.
It is understood the asking price will be between $280,000 to $300,000, and already $53,000 worth of pledges to see the church remain in community hands were received at the meeting.
A committee has now been formed to take the possibility of a sale forward.
The Anglican Church has justified the sale saying in recent years the church had very little use, but it also supported the possibility of the community buying the hall.
Federal resident Alan Goldstein said the church was an important asset within a village precinct which should remain in community hands.
Recently it has been used for folk music nights, choir singing and meditation.
