Paper number plate driver’s flimsy excuse
POLICE are warning motorists hand-made number plates don't pass muster after they stopped a car yesterday on Nimbin Rd.
Richmond Local Area Command duty officer Acting Inspector Brad Walpole said when a Nimbin man was stopped by police travelling towards Lismore about 9.20am he told officers they had no right to stop him.
"If I pay I come under the Crown, if I don't pay I do not come under your jurisdiction," police allege the man said. Insp Walpole said the silver Ford Festiva was bearing personalised paper number plates with typed lettering.
"The vehicle was stopped and police discovered that the 57-year-old driver was unlicensed and the Festiva was unregistered."
Insp Walpole said the man would be charged with driving unlicensed, using an unregistered vehicle, refusing to state his name and address, and unlawfully possessing an object resembling a number plate.
