Paid maternity leave too costly for small business

SMALL businesses would suffer under the Productivity Commission's proposed maternity leave scheme.

Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce President Shane Charles said small businesses were already under pressure. Paying superannuation for a person on maternity leave would be a huge burden.

He said he would like to survey other members of the Chamber of Commerce to get an idea as to whether employers would discriminate against women when hiring workers.

“But in saying that, we fully support women in the workplace and support paid maternity leave, but believe it should be fully paid by the Government.”
